CBS Records was a well-known record label with a rich history spanning several decades. Founded in 1961 as the international arm of Columbia Records, it operated under the name CBS Records International until 1990. During that time, it played a significant role in distributing Columbia's recordings outside of North America.
In January 1988, CBS sold its record label to Sony for $2 billion. The company was then renamed Sony Music Entertainment in 1991, and CBS Records was renamed Columbia Records after Sony acquired the Columbia name and trademarks from EMI.
In 2006, CBS Corporation revived the CBS Records name to distribute soundtracks associated with its television products. This incarnation of CBS Records operated until 2021, focusing on digital distribution methods.
