Simon & Garfunkel is an American folk-rock duo consisting of singer Paul Simon and singer Art Garfunkel. One of the best-selling music groups of the 1960s, their greatest hits - including "The Sound of Silence" (1965), "Mrs. Robinson "(1968)," The Boxer "(1969) and" Bridge over Troubled Water "" (1970) - reached number one on the singles charts around the world.
Simon and Garfunkel met at an elementary school in Queens, New York in 1953, where they learned to harmonize and began writing materials. In 1957, under the alias Tom & Jerry, teenagers had their first little success with "Hey Schoolgirl," a song that mimicked their idols, the Everly Brothers. In 1963, aware of the growing public interest in folk music, they regrouped and signed to Columbia Records as Simon & Garfunkel. Their debut, Wednesday morning at 3am, sold badly and they broke up once again; Simon returned to his solo career, this time in England. In June 1965, a new version of "The Sound of Silence" with dubbed electric guitar and drums became a major US radio hit, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100. The duo joined forces again to release their second studio album, Sounds of Silence and tourism colleges all over the country. With their third release, Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme (1966), the duo took more creative control. Their music was used in the 1967 movie The Graduate, which gave them further exposure. Their next album "Bookends" (1968) topped the Billboard 200 [2] and featured the number one movie "Mrs. Robinson ".
The duo's often turbulent relationships led to artistic misunderstandings and their disintegration in 1970. Their latest studio album, Bridge over Troubled Water, was released this year and became their greatest success, becoming one of the best-selling albums in the world. Following their breakup, Simon released several acclaimed albums, including 1986's Graceland. Garfunkel released solo hits such as "All I Know" and briefly began his acting career, starring in two of Mike Nichols' films, Catch-22 and Carnal Knowledge, and in Nicolas Roeg's 1980 film Bad Timing. The duo bonded several times, and in 1981 their "Central Park Concert" gathered over 500,000 people, one of the greatest concerts ever.
Simon & Garfunkel won 10 Grammy Awards and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990. Rolling Stone placed them in third place on the list of the 20 greatest duos of all time. Richie Unterberger described them as "the most successful folk-rock duo of the 1960s." and one of the most popular artists of the decade. They are among the best-selling music artists, selling over 100 million records. Bridge over Troubled Water ranks 51st on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
