Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (January 27, 1756 - December 5, 1791), baptized as Johannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus Mozart, was a prolific and influential composer of the classical period.
Born in Salzburg in the Holy Roman Empire, Mozart showed remarkable abilities from an early age. Skillfully playing the keyboards and the violin, he composed from the age of five and performed for European kings. At 17, Mozart was engaged as a court musician in Salzburg, but became restless and traveled in search of a better position. During a visit to Vienna in 1781, he was dismissed from his post in Salzburg. He chose to stay in Vienna, where he gained fame but little financial security. During his final years in Vienna, he composed many of his best-known symphonies, concertos and operas, as well as fragments of a Requiem that was largely unfinished at the time of his premature death at the age of 35. The circumstances of his death were strongly mythologized.
He has composed over 600 works, many of which are considered the pinnacles of symphonic, concertante, chamber, opera and choral music. He is considered one of the greatest classical composers of all time, and his influence on Western music is profound. Ludwig van Beethoven composed his early pieces in the shadow of Mozart, and Joseph Haydn wrote: "the offspring will not see such talent again in 100 years"
